In writing up my final exam for the complexity class I am teaching, I realize (once again) how much I hate writing exams. I just don’t see a good way to do it. All I really want to do is test students’ understanding of the material, not how “clever” they are. On the other hand, I don’t want to ask completely trivial questions either. But there don’t seem to be very many questions that fall in the “sweet spot” in the middle. (Sigh.)
